GINA BIRCH AND THEN IT HAPPENED

Gina Birch, one half of legendary punk outfit The Raincoats released her first solo record I Play My Bass Loud on 24th February. The songs of I Play My Bass Loud were largely finished before Birch brought them to co-producer Youth, of Killing Joke, who has developed an impressive pedigree collaborating with legendary artists like Poly Styrene and Viv Albertine, and brought in things like middle eights and choruses. But there were also some moments of spontaneity in assembling a handful of tracks from almost-scratch.  It’s an invigoratingly punk-infused, feminist-leaning record. 'And Then it Happened' is the second track on the record. It's a dreamy soundscape of delayed guitars and lo-fi noise with Gina Birch telling an intimate story about personal struggles and breakthroughs. In a frank and humble tone, she explains, 'I'd been trying for so long, slogging, pushing, hoping dreaming. One day I stopped caring. On and on it went. just I stopped trying. Just being.' She comprehends, 'a woman being a woman'. 'And Then it Happened' illustrates the ways in which toxic productivity in a capitalist society can ware you down - a topic which is particularly poignant in a time when, for many of us, Instagram is the way in which individuals' productivity is unrealistically portrayed and perceived by the masses. It's a delightful reminder that it is ok 'just being'. Listen to 'And Then it Happened' here. -Ellie Rose-Davies
